'We are Family' is Karan Johar's dream come true movie. He thought of a desi version of Hollywood's much acclaimed 'Stepmom' and completed it in a middle kind of budget. Being a thorough professional, Karan obtained the legal rights from the original producer and then spiced it here and there with desi masala. Wonder if the filmmaker has at all experienced it in his social life. Why else did he take up such a venture based on stepmom? Anyway, the producer has succeeded in his women-centric job, especially because of his selection of a perfect cast in Kajol and Arjun Rampal. You have to believe Karan who says that he saw in his two female cast - Kajol and Kareena Kapoor - as his perfect siblings though he has no in real life. While Kajol has indeed excelled his expectation, Kareena has tried her best. Arjun Rampal has left nothing unturned to come up to Karan's level of hopes from him. That's why Karan expresses his grateful thanks to Arjun for accepting and fulfilling the job.

The movie's story is a copy of Chris Columbus' 'Stepmom' (1998) starring two top actresses - Susan Sarandon and Julia Roberts. Our desi actors have almost performed like the original movie's characters. In our desi version, Maya played by Kajol is the real mother who suffers from cervical cancer and is on deathbed. She divorces her husband Aman played by Arjun Rampal. Shreya played by Kareena Kapoor is Aman's mistress. Aman is just ready to marry her as he finds himself torn between the two women. But before marrying with her mistress, Aman wants Kareena to be well acquainted with his three kids who aren't friendly towards her. Kajol supervises over Kareena if her ex-husband's mistress is capable of looking after the children after her death. After all, the mistress isn't mummy kind of a woman. Instead, she considers children a liability. Kajol raises a million dollar question if the family would stay together?

While critically examining the movie we find that besides the top performance of the cast, it has few nice features. First, from the deathbed following her terminal cancer Kajol tells Kareena that the latter is her kids' present and future as their past (Kajol) is going to die soon. Kajol and Kareena play their roles like noteworthy sequences include Kajol's break down in her kitchen and muttering "I don't want to die!", her husband announcement that he can neither survive without his mistress nor can he turn his back on his children. This is aman's dilemma. At the same time, this is good enough to bring tears in the eyes of the beholder. Similarly, the "Jailhouse Rock" sequence picturized on Kajol provides a soothing relief to the family. Iravati Harshe plays the doctor's character very well. When Kajol asks if she is going to die the doctor tells her that she will live as long as she can, but adds that from now onwards she should count her life in moments, not years!

The story is confined to the original though the writer could have added something desi to it. In the same way, the screenplay lacks the original movie's vitality. Mohanam's cinematography is nice in capturing the home. In the music department, the Shankar-Ehsan-Loy trio provides a brilliant rocking track, but fails to add any other thing. Siddharth P. Malhotra succeeds in his directorial debut. Overall, 'We Are Family' is worth watching, especially because of the cast's brilliant performances.
