'Sankat City' is Bollywood's hat ke (different kind) movie that falls in the category of meaningful ones like 'Khosla Ka Ghosla', 'Johnny Gaddar', 'Parzania', 'Black Friday' to mention a few. Such movies have no scope for low type of romance, fun or crime. Pankaj Advani has depicted the city of Mumbai's all aspects, especially the metropolis' black holes where greed, crime, black money, and ugly show of pomp and pleasure have flourished during the past few decades. After the partition of India, Mumbai took the place of Lahore, now in Pakistan, as the city of paradise on earth as far as the wealth and pleasure are concerned. The booming city that is known as the principal business capital of India and also entertains the nation has also introduced several vices. Pankaj's zany characters in different spheres of life tell us the city's story. The director shows how many people living in Mumbai aspire to turn rich in no time, and that too by resorting to any means.

Thus, Pankaj's 'Sankat City' features an assortment of zany characters that include a car thief, a con woman, gangster, god man, film producer, builder, actor, his duplicate, mechanic, prostitute, chauffeur, and hit man. They comprise desperate men and women shadowboxing with the vagaries of chance and fate. Their madcap antics result in their lives getting inextricably entwined with each other, leading to madness and mayhem! They engage themselves in money, murder, revenge, greed, fear, deceit, fun and romance, to hit their aim of quickly getting rich and big in life.

The movie centers on a number of characters. Guru played by KK Menon is a smalltime car thief. Ganpat, who owns a dilapidated garage, is his partner-in-crime. Guru whacks cars and Ganpat played by Dilip Prabhawalkar gives them a makeover to sell them for a neat profit. One night, while returning to his kholi, Guru chances upon a Mercedes parked outside a brothel. He steals the car and takes it to Ganpat. While working on the car they discover a sum of Rs. ten million. This leads them to dreaming big. Little do they know that the stolen car and the money belongs to a vicious gangster/loan shark called Faujdaar, played by Anupam Kher! Guru's plans rebound as he tries to sell the car to Suleman Supari played by Rahul Dev.

The latter informs his friend Faujdaar. Scared for his life, Guru says that the moolah is in Ganpat's garage. Faujdaar sends his henchman with Guru to retrieve the cash. However, Ganpat hides the money. When Guru reaches the garage he finds Ganpat has lost his memory following an accident. Guru can't find the money. So, Faujdaar decides to bump off Guru, who pleads for a grace period of 3 days to cough up the dough. The dejected Guru runs into Mona, a con woman who had earlier teamed up with him in a smalltime con job.

The heist had been a success, but Mona leaves Guru in a lurch. She puts a sting on a builder named Pachisia played by Yashpal Sharma. Since Guru needs the dough quick, he teams up with Mona played by Rimi Sen. Mona and Guru successfully con a large sum of money off the builder only to lose it again. The story then weaves itself to a thriller, going through a series of hilarious events, comic situations and nerve-wracking moments played by Chunkey Pandey in a double role as Sikandar Khan the actor and his body double, Manoj Pahwa as the director and Sanjay Mishra as his assistant, Hemant Tiwari as Philip Fattoo, Virendra Singh as Faujdar's guru among others.

Pankaj's choice of actors is excellent and therefore he has succeeded in executing his plan very well. This is worth watching how Kay Kay Menon as Guru plays a bindaas, bumbling and often neurotic car thief, a rat forever on the lookout for the elusive opportunity! Similarly, Rimi Sen as Mona plays a street-smart con-woman, a go-getter and impatient. KK and Rimi Sen have set new standards by their excellent performance in the movie. Incidentally, both play unreal characters very successfully. Among other actors, Anupam Kher as usual plays well even as one running a seedy nightclub called 'Jhoom'. Rahul Dev plays his hitman's role very well. Chunky Pandey playing Sikander Khan has done his job very well. Yashpal Sharma as Pawan Pachisia, Dilip Prabhavalkar as Ganpat and Hemant Pandey are okay.

Ranjit Barot's music is lovable and so also the songs by Roop Kumar Rathod, Ranjit Barot, Juune Banerji and Sukhwinder Singh. Panchhi Jalonvi and Mehboob have penned the lyrics.

Overall, the movie is a complete entertainer.
