Varun Khanna, who has made two little-known films in the US, has entered into Bollywood with his 'Bad Luck Govind'. He says that the movie is inspired by a Buddhist chant, 'Nam Myoho Renge Kyo'. The Buddhist chant, according to him, means that waking up to the true nature of life and realizing that all things are connected, and through the close relationship between us and our surroundings, we have the ability to change ourselves and the world we live in!
The year 2009 seems to have begun with the flicks falling in the category of comedies during its very first week. This movie is an addition to that list. The Buddhist chant can be termed as 'Muqaddar Ka Bandar'. In fact, this movie is also written and produced by Varun Khanna and stars VJ Gaurav Kapur and Hrishitaa Bhatt in the lead roles. Other actors in the movie include Govind Namdev, Parmeet Sethi, Vrajesh Hirjee, Lalit Mohan Tiwari and Ganesh Yadav. Actress Archana Puran Singh also marks her presence with a special appearance.

As said earlier, the movie is a comedy with, of course, a lot of dramatic moments and some music. According to the story, Govind played by Gaurav Kapur is the main protagonist, who always falls a prey to his misfortunes. This guy from Delhi, though neurotic and irrational, has some problem in his connection with God, and always lands up in one or the other trouble. For instance, when he passes by a cow, she decides to stop giving milk! When he needs a cup of tea, the milk curdles as soon as it is put in the tea!!

This is purely an accident that Govind gets involved in an uproarious national incident with Mamta played by Archana Puran Singh, a news anchor and thus lands in Mumbai. However, his bad luck follows him closely there too. In Mumbai, he meets six crazy underworld 'bhais' -- satta bookies, namely, Govind Namdev, Parmeet Sethi, Vrajesh Hirjee, Lalit Mohan Tiwari and Ganesh Yadav, besides a pretty nurse in Hrishitaa Bhatt. As the luck of all the eight people is involved, the movie has a series of humorous situations. And, in the midst of all this, Govind acquires faith in life!

So, this is the story of one such diffident commoner who feels that he will bring misfortune to anyone who comes close to him. Since he has by now learnt the art of living life, Govind Sharma hopes that luck would change. As a result, he migrates from Delhi to Mumbai where he stumbles upon a bookie gang headed by Kapoor played by Parmeet Sethi . On learning of Govind's bad luck, Kapoor tries to manipulate it to his merit by spreading his negative vibes on the rival gang.

Analyzing the movie, we find that unfortunately the producer fails on both fronts. In spite of a potential theme and the unique storyline , the movie ends up in a one-dimensional gang-war! While the movie has an interesting and a hat ke type of theme centered on an average common man, it fails in respect of script editing coupled with direction vis-à-vis characterization. The love angle also fails in taking the story forward as Hrishitaa Bhatt lacks her usual charm in this movie.

Acting-wise, Gaurav Kapoor under-acts and therefore fails miserably while others including Govind Namdeo, Vrajesh Hirjee, Ganesh Yadav and Lalit Tiwari play their roles better. Hrishitaa Bhatt, however, disappoints. Zakir Hussain and Parmeet Sethi fare well. There are several drawbacks like the unnecessarily added song sequence as well as the love angle in it. Though a comedy it's full of awful jokes. On the whole, the director Varun Khanna fails in his first attempt but may have luck next time.
