'Maharathi' is a Hindi movie starring Naseeruddin Shah, Paresh Rawal, Om Puri, Boman Irani, Neha Dhupia, Tara Sharma and Vivek Shauq. The movie's story is very interesting. This is the story of a lower middle class man getting trapped in his own lies and how he finally manages to save his skin. This forms the crux of the story of 'Maharathi'. The movie is based on Paresh Rawal's popular Gujarati play which has been running for almost 21 years now and has already had 700 successful stage performances.
There is a person named Subhash played by a theater personality Paresh Rawal. He has spent the last 10 years unsuccessfully trying to get acting parts in films. He makes ends meet by his uncanny ability to think on his feet committing small time cons on unsuspecting victims. One night he saves a man's life: to do so he puts his himself at risk. He accompanies the injured man back home. The injured is a very rich person named Mr. Adenwalla played by Naseeruddin Shah. Subhash is awe struck at the grandeur and affluence of the injured named.

Remember that none other than Paresh Rawal plays the character of Subhash. Interestingly, Subhash realizes this may lead to a generous tip. However, the grateful Adenwalla hires Subhash as his driver, but doesn't offer huge tips as expected by Subhash. Adenwalla's wife is Mallika played by charming Neha Dhupia. She resents Subhash' proximity to her husband and senses that this man is taking undue advantage of her husband. This makes Subhash jittery. Since Subhash is now firmly ensconced in Adenwalla's house and heart, his wife is jealous of him. Meanwhile, Adenwalla discovers his wife's evil designs. Therefore, Adenwalla, driven to the point of insanity by his money hungry wife, decides to take the ultimate revenge. He puts his wife in a catch 22 situations by throwing down a challenge! He dies but leaves a huge insured sum of Rs 240 million.

At this juncture, Subhash recognizes this as an opportunity to rid himself of his lifetime of middle class mediocrity and poverty. So, he collaborates even with his benefactor's wife (Mallika aka Neha) to acquire all the money and property of Adenwalla. Working hand in glove, both Mallika and Subhash get a caretaker played by Tara Sharma with the help of their family lawyer (Boman Irani) to be a witness to an ailing Mr. Adenwalla's presence in the house, which they concoct, their plans. Several thrilling situations arise in their plan, ranging from false alibis, and double-crossing, and phony kidnappings to hidden agendas, which wreck havoc all around.

But even the best-laid plans can go awry and this brings ACP Gokhale (Om Puri) and Inspector Borkar (Vivek Shaw) into the picture. How the scheming Subhash gets trapped in his own lies and how he finally manages to save his skin, forms the crux of the story of 'Maharathi'. The movie is full of intrigues and turns and twists in its plot to keep one in nail-biting mode. All the actors do full justice to their characters. If Naseer renders a success-gone-sour story, then Paresh is excellent. Boman Irani is worth a watch, as always. Neha Dhupia plays a villainous role very well.
