    MOVIE REVIEW: Jawani Diwani
NONSENSE "N" VULGARITY - AN AVOIDABLE JOYRIDE

By Satyajit - Eye TV India Bureau

    Critic's I-view

"Nonsense 'n' Vulgarity - An Avoidable Joyride" should be punch line of this loosely conceived comical flick 'Jawani Diwani'. It can be a January jinx; the ill fate of January releases is proving true after viewing 'Jawani Diwani'. "Singer without using a finger", "Khol Ke Baithi Hai Kya", "Lag Gaye" (interval caption) etc - the double meaning statement forms the epitome of the vulgar sentiments the movie conveys through comical acts. Avoidable!!!

The camera moves lecherously on physical anatomy of the actresses with monotonous and crude chick sounds. Disgusting!!! "Smooching sensation" Emraan Hashmi's poignantly bold image of an obsessed lover gets into the new image synonym of "Serial Kisser". The boldest actor who dared smooch half a dozen Bollywood beauties gets into comical mood this time with bundles of obscenity and crude jokes.

Emraan Hashmi changes gears and travels through hilarious bumpy rides of comical misadventures and mishaps that include "one night stand". The actor has either missed the bus or has his luck run out with this avoidable comical film.

After live-in relationship ('Salaam Namaste') and pre-marital sex ('Neal 'N' Nikki', the innovative boldness gets forayed as "one night stand" on celluloid. The era of experimentation is tamed as a period of unavoidable crudity and obscenity that alienates average cinema lovers from theatres. No matter how much the contents of obscenity escalate; the purpose of comical entertainment should be accomplished. The film speaks of the writer's inexperience and the director's poor vision in conceiving comical dialogues and hilarious gags. It's ridiculous that comical situations are not handled properly and actors run short of witty screenplay. So, why conceive comedy film? The formulation of commercial success changes every year and the director tries to materialize the comical wave. Director Manish Sharma has even tried to ape Subhash Ghai by playing cameo in the latter half of the film but his amateurish skill makes him an unforgettable commodity. The actors, the script and the director have disappointed; and the two-hour package becomes boring and intolerable.

In nutshell, the film is an embodiment of vulgarity molded into frame of sex comedy garnished with lascivious hip gyrating choreography with double meaning dialogues.

The thin line between sensuality and obscenity gets thinner with vulgar jokes, crude gags and obscene gestures. Debutante director Manish Sharma comes from the cadre of new directors who believe in the overnight success through depiction of oodles of sleaze. 'Jawaani Diwani' comes out with skin show of beach babes and loads of hot steamy scenes. The director has tried to plagiarize the sexual aggression of 'Murder' and the spontaneity of sex comedy 'No Entry'. Unfortunately, he has failed at both ends and the film looks like a sorry tale of misadventure and avoidable songs.

Writer Pradeep Tiwari has tried to reinvent David Dhawan's successful comical formula with an outlook of Hollywood's ultra westernized "Baywatch". It brings out the theme of lady love versus lady luck once again where the protagonist faces turbulent phases in life.

'Jawani Diwani' is the story of an overambitious singer Mann Kapoor (Emraan Hashmi), an opportunist and materialistic by instinct. The career oriented Mann has big dreams of a big name in the music world and chooses Radha (Hrishita Bhatt) as his love interest. Radha hails from an affluent and accomplished business background of an illustrious music baron Umesh Jumani (Tikku Talsania). Mann has plans of launching his singing career through the music company of Radha's father. Initially, Jumani resents but finally succumbs to his daughter's affectionate love and decides to launch Mann's singing album. Opportunist Mann's dreams get bigger as his marriage with Radha is also settled with the album's launch. Goa becomes the spotlight of entertainment where Mann and his friends decide to chill out. Seductive and sensuous beach beauty Roma Fernandez (Celina Jaitley) gets attracted to Mann's masculine charm. The fire of passion culminates into "one night stand". Mann is caught red handed and is forced to marry Roma. Chappu Bhai (Mahesh Manjrekar), the dreaded underworld don, forces Mann for the wedlock with Roma. Chappu's soft corner for Roma helps her out in this moment of crisis. Mann's dreams of stardom are doomed and he is caged in prison of his lustful desire. He repents and the marriage turns hell for him. Roma believes in the institution of marriage but makes a sacrifice for Mann. She frees Mann by divorcing him unconditionally. Mann re-enters Radha's life but she and her father avoid him and call him a liar. Mann convinces Radha of his misfortune and soon everything returns to normal. Umesh Jumani, Radha's father, rearranges Mann's marriage with Radha with his launch of his first musical album -- "Jawani Diwani". This time Roma reenters Mann's life as the lead model for his music video shoot out in Mauritius. Mann feels sentimental about Roma. She resents and advises Mann to be practical and professional. The destiny has other plans as Radha learns about Mann's relationship with Roma and decides to reunite them. The excruciating and intolerable film ends on a happy note with Mann achieving personal and professional gratification.

Emraan Hashmi, branded as a Bhatt camp favorite, has hard luck outside the camp and it continues in this film. After the success of erotic thrillers ('Murder' and 'Zeher') he tries his luck on a sex comedy but fails miserably. Celina Jaitley continues with her bikini parade after the success of last year's hit 'No Entry'. The actress still relies more on her physical anatomy than her acting skill. The stone-faced ex-Miss India has a list of unsuccessful films like 'Janasheen' and 'Silsilay' with similar acts of sleaze feast. Celina has been an eye candy for ogling eyeballs rather than a piece of appreciation from the media fraternity. The bikini parade and sexual depiction speak more for her greed for stardom that has been eluding her. Neglected and unsuccessful Hrishita Bhatt returns with her new image makeover in bold attire after row of flops.

    click for larger view
Celina Jaitley shows signs of aging. Hrishita Bhatt delivers another second fiddle role and like her earlier releases the fate of the film remains the same. Mahesh Manjrekar looks more of a buffoon than an underworld don in poorly scripted characterization of "Chappu Bhai". The actor- director who showed some promise as director in 'Vaah Life Ho Toh Aisi' is unbearable in this intolerable comedy. Tikku Talsani sounds loud and mechanical at places.

    click for larger view
The music is below average and no soundtrack holds attention. Sajid-Wajid and new music director Siddarth-Suhaas are disappointing with plagiarized hip-hop tunes and soundtracks. It sounds ridiculous, as the director has satirically characterized Anu Malik played by Shehzad Khan, as one of the characters with such soundtracks. Cinematography by Rajeev Srivastav is brilliant in capturing exotic locations of Mauritius. Choreography by Stanley holds attention in Celina's stage shows otherwise it's an ordinary affair all the way.

The shoddy script, reckless screenplay, uninspiring loud music coupled with amateurish directorial skill speaks for the film's ill fate. 'Jawani Diwani' looks like a losing preposition all the way.
