So what makes a film click at the box office, is it a young and scintillating former Miss India or a boy who has the kisser image or a dynamic macho dude? The equation is right; Himesh Reshammiya more than expected even the pre-release response, thanks to melodious music. But at the end of the day, what counts is how the film has developed and what it presents on the platter for the viewers. Luckily 'Aashiq Banaya Aapne' doesn't have a tough competition. It does face tough competition from 'Ramji Londonwaley', a comedy and 'Pyaar Mein Twist', a mature age love story. But none of these had a connection with the teenager audience.

Last week's release 'No Entry' may have got very good reviews and mouth publicity as well, but the stage was still empty for a good college age love story that 'Aashiq Banaya Aapne' promises to be. Grandson of late lyricist Anand Bakshi, Aditya Dutt makes his directorial debut with this film. He has guts to carry a film on his own. But he has to make his equations more viable and there lies the importance of the story. 'Aashiq Banaya Aapne' has all the ingredients to make it a masala entertainer and Tanushri Dutta's ample skin show also has a mass appeal. However, because of a weak story it has failed to pass the litmus test.
'Aashiq Banaya Aapne' is a teenage story. It starts with the cupid hitting the cool dude Karan (Sonu Sood). He falls in love with a cute girl Sneha (Tanushri Dutta) but his love is deep rooted in his soul. Despite all his courage, Karan fails to express his true feelings to Sneha. Karan feels that by being goody goody to his girl friend he can win her heart but Sneha wants love to be expressed in the magical way. Enters Vicky (Emraan Hashmi), the childhood friend of Karan, and all the equations of love seem to fall for Karan. Vicky is an out and out playboy. He catches the attention of everyone by his charisma. He is also apt in making others know about his feelings. In short, he is the kind of a flirt boy for whom every girl will vouch for. Sneha too gets attracted towards Vicky.
Thus, Karan gets suspicious that Vicky will soon run away with his girlfriend. Karan does confront Vicky on this issue, but the latter tells him to calm down, as he does not have any such intention. The bond of friendship between the three keeps growing but parallel to it also moves on the love that is building between Sneha and Vicky. Karan is perplexed but being a shy and introvert guy in nature; he fails to face the challenges. And, one fine day Karan decides to settle things. However, this shocks Sneha, who returns to Karan for support and this time Karan finally tells Sneha that he loves her. But, all love stories do not end on a perfect note and here Vicky returns to create a big stir in the lives of Sneha and Karan.

Produced by Bala Patel, 'Aashiq Banaya Aapne' is a love story woven around lots of human traits. It has shades of love, obsession, trust, friendship, deceit and passion all mixed up in one story. Debutant director Aditya Dutt makes the story move like a pendulum from one angle to the other in a triangular love story. He gets some good support from his technical crew, especially in cinematography and choreography departments. A. K. N. Sebastian is brilliant behind the camera and he uses it like a brush for the canvass.

The locales are very well used to develop the right mood for the film and so does music for the film. Choreographer Sabina Khan creates novel steps for the star cast and does justice to the music. Aditya Dutt is clear about the narration from frame one. But, it is post-interval part where the film falters the most. People expected some thing novel from a new guy on the block but Aditya Dutt fails to defy the stereotype. He falls a prey to the box office pressure and ends up messing all his labor that he did in the first half of the film.

'Aashiq Banaya Aapne' does not get very good support from its cast. Emraan Hashmi does have a typical bad lover boy kind of image and has also some fan following for his kisser boy image but his role in 'Aashiq Banaya Aapne' required more maturity than what he did in this film. Emraan Hashmi has gotten fixed up in his image and now he needs to move on from what he has been doing again and again in films like 'Murder' and 'Zeher'. Sonu Sood also tries to match up with the wits and wickedness of Emraan Hashmi but falls short of expectations.

To make a two-hero film, it has to be neck and neck competition between the two performers, but Sonu Sood loses the competition in his first fully blown up role. Tanushri Dutta looks too desperate for making it big from her very first film. She leaves nothing for her future films and sheds her clothes in the first film. On the whole, not many people will say to her Aashiq Banaya Aapne after watching the film.
