How do you feel when your similar looking sibling deceits you for lust of your spouse? It sounds interesting in the beginning but sounds boring in the end. This is the plot of 'Sheesha', that comes with the mysterious tagline "some mirrors lie". Bollywood's new formula of mixing skin show with spine chilling mysteries seems to be blossoming with these two releases. 'Sheesha' and 'Chahat-Ek Nasha' have similar plots with heaps of skin show. Ashu Trikha tries his best to recreate 'Murder' with the lead actress of 'Julie' by selecting Bangkok as the backdrop of the film.
'Sheesha' has been hugely inspired from 70's hit 'Sharmilee' (starring Rakhee, Shashi Kapoor) and 90's 'Darr'. There have been dozens of instances where the gray shaded character becomes eccentric in obsession for his lover. 'Sheesha' seems to be one such film that has been fed on the heavy dosage of sex, deceit and obsession of the characters. Neha Dhupia gets "bolder" and "hotter" this time as she outnumbers Mallika in kissing scenes. Sonu Sood gives an ordinary performance in a love and lust show.
The film starts with the fashion show in Bangkok where Sia (Neha Dhupia), a talented fashion designer, successfully launches her new creations "Shades". It was love at first for her when she meets Raj (Sonu Sood). Raj, a business tycoon is associated with a leading television channel. He promotes Sia's creations globally as she gets accolades for it. The professional friendship blossoms into love. Raj shows his physical love to Sia but gets the shock of life when she confronts deaf and dumb sister of Sia - Ria (Neha Dhupia in double role). He was actually kissing and caressing Ria instead of Sia. Ria develops passion for Raj as her passion turns into obsession.
Ria's immense love for Raj makes her even eccentric. She even murders Diane (Elidith Macqueen) after she saw her kissing and hugging Raj. It was Ria and not Sia who gets infatuated by Raj at the fashion show. Ria even hires private detective to know whereabouts of Raj. Raj and Sia try hard to cure Ria and operation turns out to be successful but Ria claims that she is still deaf and dumb. Sia gets a business opportunity from America. She prepares for the trip. Sia decides to marry before going to America so that somebody could accompany Ria.
After Sia's departure Ria tries to seduce Raj but he does not respond to her call. Ria turns eccentric and even threatens to commit suicide. Some days later Sia returns and there is confrontation between the two sisters. In a tug of war love wins and lust fails. Ria gets killed in an encounter with Raj and Sia. The first half looks gripping as the shades of the characters unfold. Neha tries all the tricks in the book of enticing the audiences with her anatomy.
The music looks ordinary at some stages, as some songs seem to be filles. The music is melodious at some places, especially "Yaar Ko Maine" and "Mujhe Jeena Sikha Do". They seem to be heavily inspired from the hit tracks of 'Murder'. Choreography by Pony Verma seems to be authentic, and sensuous too at many places. One wonders why the director has a song "Kar Mundya" at the end. It sounds irrelevant. Cinematography by Raju Kaygee is fantastic when it has seaside views. Direction by Ashu Trikha looks amateurish in the second half when the story has a predictable climax.
'Sheesha' has the subject of 'Sharmilee', treatment of 'Murder' and the performances inspired from 'Darr'. There are some instances where similar looking sibling of different facades. Kajol has tried twice ('Dushman' and 'Kuch Khatti Kuch Meethi') in 90's and Hema Malini ('Seeta Aur Geeta') and Rakhee Gulzar ('Sharmilee') in 70's. The big shot heroes like Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgan, and Sanjay Dutt have flops in the early month of this year, as the new crop of bold actresses seems to be "gladiators" of the Bollywood arena.
Neha Dhupia comes with the performance of her career as she performs both the characters with panache. Neha has shown her physical assets but still looks graceful. She has come a long away from the struggling days of 'Qayamat'. 'Sheesha' can be the stepping-stone of her career, as she will be seen in films 'Siskiyan' and 'Kya Kool Hain Hum' in coming months. Sonu Sood shows no promise as he lacks the screen presence. After 'Shaheed Bhagat Singh' he was last seen as the younger brother of Abhishek Bachchan in 'Yuva'. 'Sheesha' seems to be wasted opportunity for him. He needs grooming for brushing his talent and skills.
Vivek Shaque does a Johny Lever act but looks ordinary. He was appreciated for his performances in films like 'Gadar' and 'Aitraaz'. Ashu Trikha has matured after the dismal show 'Deeewanapan' but his direction still lacks the flair of well-gripped thriller. The story by A. Muthu seems to gripping in the first half but slackens in the second half. A skin flick that has "mirrors" with many cracks. There seems to be bleak hope for this predictable thriller that has loads of body show. It might face an uphill task at the multiplexs but at the interiors and small centers it can do wonders.
