Most simply put, it is mixture of so many films that one has seen before from Bollywood directors that it makes you start yawning right from the beginning. What really could've been an interesting masala flick is ruined by a flurry of clichéd climaxes and most lackluster plot execution. Not quite a remake, and yet there is nothing new.
'Insaan' has so many sub-plots in the narrative that you lose track in the very first hour. It is like watching a number of stories in two hours. While the Ajay-Koena story is completely lifeless, the Akshay-Esha story is thoroughly entertaining. Similarly, the Ajay-Lara story is half-baked, but the Tusshar-Laila story has no impact.

On the plus side, the film has several mass appealing moments and clap-trap situations that would be liked by the common man. Like the confrontation scene between Ajay and Masood vis-à-vis the Indian flag is very well executed and has tremendous mass appeal. Another one like the Akshay Kumar introduction - when he tries to control an angry mob - is well handled. Even the sequences between Akshay, Esha and Archana Puransingh are well carried through.

Amjad (Akshay Kumar) is an autorickshaw driver who gives aspiring Bollywood aspirants shelter and runs around Heena (Esha Deol) who happens to look more tomboyish than she actually is. Ajit Rathore (Ajay Devgan) is a cop sworn to the nation. Lara Dutta and Koena Mitra are also in the film, with roles loosely connected with the story. Besides moving about a house clad in the kind of clothes your mother warned you about, she contributes nothing to the film.

Amjad has a brother, Azhar (Rahul Dev); he lost contact with during the Gujarat riots. Azhar is now a terrorist in charge of a mission to free Masud. Amjad, of course, doesn't know, and is happy rain dancing in the disco with his friend Avinash (Tusshar), Heena, Meghna (Lara) and Tusshar's love Indu (southern actress Laila). Indu is a village girl whose producers want to exploit because she wants to be a heroine.

The climax of the film is a hostage drama, high on action, and the kind of acting that sometimes puts one to shame with the element of overacting being overwhelming. As far as acting goes, Devgan does reasonably well as the tough guy, and Akshay gives his fans what they want. Directed by K. Subaash, the film follows the set pattern of masala films of the 80s. A remake of Krishna Vamsi's Telugu film 'Khadgam', 'Insaan' has just about everything to woo the frontbenchers.

Tusshar's acting in the film is just about okay. Esha Deol is likeable, although she tends to go over the top at times. Lara Dutta has no role to talk about. Koena Mitra carries one expression throughout the film. Laila doesn't impress. Amongst character actors, Rahul Dev and Archana Puransingh register an impact.
On the whole, 'Insaan' may click in the hindi-speaking belt of UP and Bihar where action is called for and the audience whistles through the bouts of overacting and violence mistaken for patriotism. The gunning down of the brother is near revolting and for sure the film stands no chances in refined metro audiences.
