The Hindi movie 'Elaan' is a multi-starrer Bollywoood film, which has been released along with another action packed movie 'Insaan'. Produced by Ganesh Jain and Ratan Jain, directed by Vikram Bhattt and with music by noted music director Anu Malik, the film takes moviegoers to scenic Europe. Most of the shooting is in picturesque Venice and nearby places. Although its theme is based on a crime committed in India, the story of Elaan is remarkably different from other crime thrillers churned out in Bollywood.
Eminent industrialist Kantilal Shah was killed despite tight security provided to him by the police and his own staff. Baba Sikander (Mithun Chakravarty) the gangster operates from overseas and demands Rs 20 crore. Kantilal decided to pay the extortion money. Later at the persuasion of his daughter, he refused to oblige him. He celebrates his birthday amidst tightest ever security. Soon after the celebration, Baba's man who is hiding below the lift in which he was coming upstairs killed him.

Kantilal's adopted son Karan (Rahul Khanna) gets extremely upset while the angle to the story becomes more interesting with Kantilal's daughter suspecting him. She accuses him of murdering Kantilal for grabbing his business and property. She is not alone in suspecting his involvment in the murder. His girl friend and TV journalist Priya (Amisha Patel) also suspects him to be the assassin.

With the object of doing an exclusive story and in cooperation with her management, Priya starts following Karan. They have reason to suspect Karan to be the murderer. Karan was an orphan and started his career as a tea supplier in Kantilal's company. He was hard working honest and won his confidence He treated Karan as his son and confidante. But his sister is under an erroneous impression that Karan is too ambitious to reach his goal.

Karan vows to take revenge on his father's killer Baba. He enlists the co-operation of former cop Arjun (Arjun Ramphal). Arjun helped one of the notorious criminal Abhimanyu (John Abraham) belonging to Baba's gang escape from jail for the mission. Abhimanyu on payment and assurance of release of his finance from Baba's captivity, agreed to join the mission funded by Karan.

Karan, John and Arjun then leave for Europe. Priya follows them and Karan is in for a surprise. She was later welcomed to the mission. Also Sonia (Lara Dutta) who is a bar dancer and girlfriend of Abhimanyu too joins the team. With the help of Abhimanyu, they reached the hideout of Baba and are able to secure the release of his beloved after a fierce exchange of fire.

Baba is wanted in India in connection with several murder and other cases. He will not come to India even after his brother and close aides were killed in the mission to capture him alive. Arjun was killed in one of the encounters with the mafia led by Baba. His consolation was that he was able to save Karan, John and the two girls.

Now, it for the moviegoers to wait till the last scene to see how the dreaded criminal was brought to India and stand trial. But they may not be satisfied as they see Sikander surrenders almost without a fight! And what happened to him? He learns that one cannot go on committing crimes with impunity.

Mithun's performance as Baba is noteworthy. Beauty queen Lara Dutta has not much to do in the film except showcasing her attractive face and body. But she is assured of more roles after 'Elaan' in which her performance is in accordance with the character. Amisha Patel, Rahul Khanna and Ritu Shivpuri have done justice to their roles. As stated earlier. It is different from other masala movies from Mumbai in that it has only two songs and one cabaret.
