The world is celebrating the return of Alexander, a dream that Oscar winner director Oliver Stone saw 32 years back. In India his famous film 'U Turn' sees its new avatar in Director Sanjay Gupta's 'Musafir'. There is money, mafia and murder with plenty of sex and sizzle in Sanjay Gupta's movie. Those who wish to see goodie-goodie or happy ending movies need to enter the theatre at their own risk. Because, you may find some dialogues that even close friends in the Hindi belt don't use.
It was all right for the first time to hear this type of lingo in 'Kaante' (though the trend was set in by Ram Gopal Verma in 'Satya'). The way these characters speak is a clear indication that the directors don't feel any responsibility as to what they are going to give to the audience. The most famous bandit of the Indian screen has been Gabbar Singh, but even he did not speak such a filthy language except for some desi gaalis (abuses).

Sanjay Gupta with Sanjay Dutt is the producer, and he intends to generate a breed and create a genre of films that he produced in 'Plan', directed by Hriday Shetty. But, all this and more cannot make you ignore this film. The film has some very high technical values. The story is not stereotype and the last but not the least it has a very brilliant performance by Anil Kapoor.

And, Anil Kapoor is the surprise package of the film because it is around him that the story revolves (and not Sanjay Dutt as the promos of the film suggest on TV channels). He is Lucky or you can say the lucky bastard. But, he knows that he cannot cash his luck each and every time. He wants to settle down with the sensuous girlfriend (Koena Mitra). He dreams of good days ahead and he starts planning for his new life. However, his ladylove shows him the reality of the life and that throws him back to that very grim, shady and shabby life from where Lucky wants to run away.

Besides, he has other dreaded people who are after his life. Hunting for him is a drug don (Sanjay Dutt) who sent Lucky for a fresh deal. Lucky loses his money in a chase to save his life where he encounters a corrupt police officer (Aditya Panscholi). And in between he also finds time to give lift to a sexy siren (Sameera Reddy) and peep into her past that eventually takes him to another parallel track leading to her husband (Mahesh Manjrekar). The friend becomes the prey. Lucky doesn't know who to listen to, his heart or his brain. The Gang lord will not let him breath in peace; the police chases him, either dead or alive. The memory of his lost love will not let Lucky rest in peace. He is a traveler on the path of life; the tunnel ahead of him is dark. Will he finally see the light at the end of the tunnel?

'Musafir' scores on its plot. Writers -- Sameer Malhotra and Venita Coelho -- have imbibed mystery, lust and luck in such a way that the progression takes place not in a smooth way; every turn of the story comes as a shocker to viewers. This shock and awe treatment to the story could have also worked as trump card. Every moment when the film seems to have taken a routine path, the writers' duo comes up with unexpected moments. But, this also works against the film. People in India are not used to such a type of treatment. They want their characters to remain in a definite frame of mind from the beginning till the end. What Aishwarya did in 'Khakee' is repeated here many times.

The characters are not lively but look more like imaginative characters from some novel. The language theses characters use is not suitable for the mass audience and Milap Jhaveri has faltered here. The reality looks imposed and the color treatment and light arrangements make the film more sadistic. This is going to cost the film a lot. And, the usage of songs is not justified. The film's script halts many times when these songs suddenly come from nowhere. The camera work by P.S. Vinod is novel. He has used almost all the techniques of Hollywooy films. The film needs some hard re-editing to keep the impact intact. Action sequences choreographed by Tinu Verma are the highlights. Vishal - Shekhar have tried to do justice, but lack magnetic power in them.

Among actors, 'Musafir' belongs to Anil Kapoor time and again. He is strong after a long gap. He has evolved himself a lot according to the requirements of the role. After a long time he has got such a substantial role to play. Heroes of the last slot have matured a lot in recent days and this progression will fetch him good applause. Sanjay Dutt is in a supportive role and does his part aptly.

Mahesh Manjrekar again wants to prove his acting caliber. Sameera Reddy tries to show her talent too apart from her body assets. Koena Mitra does not have much scope but the sizzling number that she does in the film is going to make people hold their breath. The overall effect of the film is such that those who are fond of intrigue and thrill will only like it. It caters only to the niche audience.
