As if Kakesh Roshan oops Rakesh Roshan and Ekta Kapoor were not enough with getting sentimentally associated with the letter 'K' (all of their films start with this letter), another director Hriyadarshan, I am sorry again, Priyadarshan is now heading for the 'H' title. His last two comedy films namely 'Hungama' and 'Hera Pheri', not only did excellent business at the box office, but were also highly appreciated for reviving the situational comedy trend in Bollywood. So, we have director Priyadarshan once again joggling with the same letter. This time his film is called 'Hulchul'.
Having started with good films like 'Khubsoorat' and 'Gardish', Priyadarshan made a large number of fans in the Hindi belt. Since he hails from the south, it is indeed a great achievement to understand the pulse of those staying as far as Jalandhar and Kanpur. Priyadarshan has attained mastery over borrowing main story ideas from the hit south Indian films and add them with the cow belt flavor. Like 'Hera Pheri' and 'Hungama', 'Hulchul' is also a remake of a blockbuster Malayalam film 'God Father' directed by the director-duo Siddique Lal, who are also credited with the direction of 'Hera Pheri' in its original version.

'Hulchul' is a fresh look at the comedy with a huge star cast that includes Akshaye Khanna and Kareena Kapoor from the new generation and Amrish Puri, Lakshmi, Paresh Rawal, Jackie Shroff and Arbaaz Khan from the old brigade. The added bonus is Arshad 'circuit' Warsi. 'Hulchul' is that makes ripples between the two estranged families, headed by Angaarchand (Amrish Puri), and Lakshmidevi (Lakshmi), respectively.

Though they don't live in the same village, yet they share a bond of rivalry. The anger in Angaarchand is such that all the members of his family (himself and four sons Jackie Shroff, Paresh Rawal, Arbaaz Khan and Akshaye Khanna) have taken an oath to stay away from women. Angaarchand always has an upper hand but not until luck strikes Lakshmidevi in the form of her grand daughter Anjali (Kareena Kapoor). She studies in the same college as does Angaarchand's youngest son Jai (Akshaye Khanna).

Lakshmi Devi wants to take advantage of the situation, but it is not so easy. Both Jai and Anjali pretend to fall in love with each other and then Lucky (Arshad Warsi) enters the scene as Jai's friend. He comes up with 'novel' ideas that eventually lead them to a complete mess. The facade of love diminishes soon and the young ones find that they are really in love with each other. Thus the story heads for a collision that also has this new love angle added to it.

As in his other movies, 'Hulchul' too shows his mastery over the craft. Right from his first comedy film 'Hera Pheri', Priyadarshan has made it a point to rope in some good people to tickle your bones, and 'Hulchul' has all the ingredients assimilated to generate a good family entertainer. When most of the filmmakers are running behind skin shows, this film showcases how the audience can be wooed without being vulgar. The first thing that goes in the favor of the film is its story. Though borrowed from another film, it has been aptly modified by Neeraj Vora to suit the masses in the Hindi belt. In fact, Neeraj lives up to expectations from him.

Dialogues by none other than veteran K. P. Saxena add enormous value to the film's narration. And, last but not the least, is the film's photography. Jeeva once again has excelled with camera and has come out as a winner with innovative frames and camera movements. It has brilliant technical team, the best cast, accurate timing and aesthetic taste. And in Akshaye Khanna, Priyadarshan finds his new protégé. Akshaye was instrumental in Priyadarshan's last film 'Hungama' and he seems to have mastered the language. Akshaye has not only mastered his timing but he has brought in so many nuances that an actor like him can only bring in with the character. As Akshaye has said in recent interviews, he is not a method actor and his extempore abilities come handy when he is there in front of the camera with his lines.

Priyadarshan's film is never complete without Paresh Rawal. He has been instrumental in setting the pace of the narration right in all Priyadarshan films, be it 'Hera Pheri', 'Yeh Tera Ghar Yeh Mera Ghar', 'Hungama' or now 'Hulchul'. His efforts make a lot of difference. Every time he is on the screen, be it a verbal dual with Amrish Puri or in the climax to create a hilarious situation, he only stops at nothing. And, following him is our own circuit alias Arshad Warsi. Priyadarshan in 'Hulchul' has rightly cashed the fame he got in 'Munnabhai MBBS'.

Arshad Warsi once again makes people sit and take note of him. All other actors too support the film aptly. And, there is bubbly, chirpy, mischievous Kareena Kapoor too. Though, she does not get enough scope to perform in the second half of the film, the time before interval belongs to her and Akshaye Khanna. New music director Vidyasagar has not created any 'Hulchul' with his music though. However, on the whole it is the humor factor that makes the film sail smoothly at the box office. It's a completely family entertainer.
