A crazy girlfriend, a demanding wife and a helpless husband- cum- lover-all these characters lead the story of the film 'Dobara' on the platform of conflict, confusion, responsibility, commitment and human relationships. 'Dobara' is ready with some serious stuff like a little suspense about a son and a son's reaction when he meets his parents on his thirteenth birthday, to appeal the audience emotionally.
The story revolves around three characters. A writer Ranvir Sehgal played by Jackie Shroff, his wife psychiatrist Anjali (Mahima Choudhury) and ex-beloved Riya Deshmukh (Raveena Tondon). Riya is a mentally retarded and is being treated in an asylum for 14 years. One day, she gets out of the asylum to find out his lost love Ranvir Sehgal known as Vir. Meanwhile Vir gets married to Anjali. After 14 years Riya again meets Ranvir and wants him to forget about his marriage with Anjali and live with her as before. But Ranvir is helpless and tells Riya that they can't live together as he is a responsible husband now.

But the story takes an interesting turn when Riya reveals to Ranvir about their son and asks him to leave for Goa to attend their son's thirteenth birthday. However, when Vir informs Anjali about his visit to Goa, she gets annoyed. Helpless Vir finally leaves with Riya for Goa to meet his son Varun. Lonely Anjali also leaves for Goa to see how Vir is spending time with Riya. On her way to Goa she meets Rana (Pakistani actor Mohmmad Rana). A friendship develops between them. But this relationship is limited till Anjali meets Vir in the hotel. Here the wife Anjali and first love Riya of Vir clash with each other. But all the tension ends when Anjali reveals the truth that they also had a son named Rohit who died at an age of eight due to blood cancer. Soon Anjali and Riya become good friends. Then all the three visit their son Varun, who is being brought up by a Mehta couple for the last 13 years.

When Vir, Anjali and Riya reach Varun, the story unveils one more side of the teen psychology. Varun is not ready to accept Vir and Riya as his father and mother after a lapse of 13 years. His stepmother Mrs. Mehta also joins with him. With this Riya gets annoyed and leaves that place. But Varun feels guilty and finally accepts Riya as his mother. Riya now realizes that the success of love lies in sacrifice and not in possession. So she agrees to Varun living with Mrs. Mehta. Thus all misunderstandings disappear and everybody lives happily.

In this film, the director has tried to show three aspects of human relationship. One, the responsibility of a husband and the commitment of a true lover in one's post- marriage life. Second, the outburst of anger of a wife when her husband's ex-girlfriend enters into their married life. Third, a son's predicament to accept his real parents after being brought up by another couple for 13 long years.

The story line is quite strong. The conflict between the main characters provides a strong platform for smooth progress of the story. The veteran actor Jackie has come out well with his natural acting. Raveena Tondon's acting in a little abnormal and crazy situation of a lover is satisfactory. For the first time, a Pakistani actor Mohmmad Rana is playing a role against actress Mahima Choudhury. Though Rana appears for a short period on the screen, yet he leaves an impression. Mahima Choudhury has also got a good chance to identify herself as a demanding wife.

The music of Anu Malik matches with the lyrics of Javed Akhtar in a serious story like this but lacks entertainment. The visuals and props also move well. But too many flashbacks leave the audience a little confused. The most entertaining side of Bollywood cinema is comedy and that is missing . Hence this film with a strong and serious theme will be appreciated more by elders than the youths.
