Gourang Doshi who made a success film like 'Aankhen' two years back has got the pulse of the modern moviegoers, who are still having the Big B hangover. He has brought Amitabh Bachchan in a new film 'Deewaar', with a different story line but an old name. The film will surely attract a section of viewers to watch as to what the new 'Deewaar' holds for old Amitabh. That is the expectation of Doshi who has the moot idea to cash in on the angry young man image of Amitabh of yesteryears packed in a new frame. Even the director of the movie Milan Luthria has also fulfilled his long cherished desire to make it a memorable movie. He wished to make a movie with Amitabh and that too with him in a long role.

'Deewaar' has been in news since the time it was launched about a year back and has been completed in record time in spite of a mega star-cast comprising Big B, Sanjay Dutt and Akshaye Khanna. Amrita Rao plays the sole heroine opposite Akshaye while Kay Kay (Chhal) plays the main baddie. It's not a remake of old 'Deewaar'. It is based on sensitive border issue between India and Pakistan. Except the title, there is no similarity between old 'Deewaar' and the new. But yes Big B played in both the movies. Here in this movie 'Deewaar' means wall emerged out of the partition between two brothers or two countries. But the old 'Deewar' was the divider between two brothers.

However, this 'Deewaar' is the wall dividing the two countries, politically and geographically. Gaurang Doshi has tried to dust away disbelief regarding the current Indo-Pak thaw, which affirms that his movie is neither nationalist, nor are there any instances of Pakistan punches. The movie 'Deewaar' is an attempt to break down the 'hatred walls' between India and Pakistan. It is based on a true story, which happened on Dec 3, 1971 when war broke out between India and Pakistan. At the end of that war, 92,000 Pakistani soldiers returned home... 60,000 Indian Defence Personnel also came back... but 54 Indian soldiers remained unaccounted. However, Pakistan on its part denies their presence in any Pakistani jail. Even after 33 years, their families are waiting for their return. This film is dedicated to those men.

Here Amitabh Bachchan has portrayed the character of Ranvir Kaul who is looking forward to re-establish his angry old image. Big B is playing the leader of 54 prisoners of war rotting in Pakistan. He leads them to escape from the jail in the movie. Zestful actress Tanuja plays the role of a wife who unendingly awaits the arrival of her husband suffering in prison cell. Talking of coincidences, the film marks the reunion of the talented Tanuja as Big B's onscreen wife after over three decades. The duo was the lead pair in 'Pyar Ki Kahani' (1971), and also co-starred in 'Yaraana', 'Khuddar' and lately in 'Khakee'. Akshaye Khanna who is back after taking a good break plays a nice role in 'Deewar'. He plays the role of Gaurav, the man on a mission. He is Ranvir's son who goes to rescue him when Bachchan is taken as a prisoner in Pakistan.

Sanjay Dutt helps Akshaye Khanna in the rescue and travels from India to Pakistan in search of his father. The character is that of a normal guy who earnestly wants to bring his father back home. With Khanna junior portraying the character, rest assured, some fine shadow are in store for the audiences. Amrita Rao plays a cameo in this escape drama. The petite actress plays Radhika, the love interest of Gaurav. Radhika is a Hindu born as a Pak citizen. A conservative character accompanies Gaurav on his journey but never becomes his destination. Sanjay Dutt pitches in with yet another author-backed role, that of Khan. He helps Akshaye in his mission. Sanju baba who is frequently seen in item numbers swings to the tune of Marhaba Marhaba.

The producers have hired Ukranian belly dancers for the liveliness, but the effect of the song is not as expected. At the same time, Sanju's dance steps have hurt his fans. Chaliye Ve Chaliye (Vande Mataram) tries hard to be patriotic but fails. In the meantime, Big B's punch in the air reminds us of his past. The movie is having a song, which is very much like Rehne ko Ghar Nahi from the movie 'Sadak'. But the music turns out to be just about average which is disappointing for a project of such stature.

The highly underestimated actor of films like 'Bhopal Express' and 'Chhal' strikes back as a bad man in this magnum work. Kay Kay is Sohail, the Pak jailor who lawfully tries to banish the 54 prisoners. Like many others, Bachchan happens to be his singular motivation to do the movie. 'Deewaar' gives the actor his meatiest role so far. The comedy role player-cum-villain Raghuvir Yadav is enormously gifted with the role of a prisoner; named Jata. Considering his track record, this talent house would shine through this role too. The film promises to be a highly volatile escape thriller mounted on a mammoth campus.

While several films have been made on the war theme, for the first time comes a film that will depict the traumatic life of a PoW (prisoner of war).
