Routine films in Bollywood are treated as outdated these days. Boy meets girl, she hates boy or her parents hate boy; they quarrel and songs of separation and desperation follow though all ends happily. This has been the age-defying formula for Bollywood films for ages. Those who have grown up seeing and believing are nowadays feeling very good. The reason is that every second director in Bollywood is trying something new. You may hate these movies or you may love them but for sure you cannot ignore these movies. It's like 'Shaadi Ka Laddoo'; either you eat it now or later, the result is the same. Director Raj Kaushal presents the flabbergasted people on screen in his new film 'Shaadi Ka Laddoo'. This is Kaushal's second movie after the goodie goodie 'Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi' (Sanjay Suri, Rinkie Khanna and lots of other young boys and girls). Touted to be a comedy with punch like 'Raha na jaaye…. Saha na jaye', this film starring Sanjay Suri, Divya Dutta, Mandira Bedi. She is married to director Raj Kaushal and its her second outing too on silver screen after an impressive performance in 'Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge', with Aashish Chowdhary and some sizzling and steaming gals.

'Shaadi Ka Laddoo' is an impressive film in ideation. Raj Kaushal has worked hard to conceive it better than his debut film and even sweated a lot in keeping the basic idea of the film intact throughout the film. But, alas! More he works on his script, messier it becomes and more he keeps his focus tight, worse it becomes as the film stands just at one point and does not move even an inch till the end. Two friends Ravi (Aashish Chowdhary) and Som (Sanjay Suri) are like the two sides of the same coin. They share many things between them and trust each other. Som marries Geetu (Divya Dutta) and Ravi gets a job in London. After seven long years, the destiny brings both back from where they had started.

Beautiful and titillating girls always surround Ravi, whereas Som cannot erase impact of Geetu from his mind. In comes Tara (Mandira Bedi, who looks so gorgeous and hot, given a chance she can be new age Parveen Babi, is anyone listening?) Tara meets Som, who loses his heart and is completely gaga over Tara. But before the love voyage leads to dating, sweet Geetu strikes again. The hell breaks loose when she comes to know about the affair between Tara and Som. Geetu is in no mood to forgive Som. Ravi is also not very happy. Tara takes charge and arranges reunion of the lovers/ex- lovers.

Raj Kaushal is a brilliant director. He has innovative idea and weaves small incidents into one story; finds knots among loose ends of tiny stories and makes a fine web. He is a find technician and a better production man. He shoots on minimum locations and the cast is very definitive; no need for too many extras or huge sets. Such projects look very impressive. This is why a producer like Vicky Tejwani agrees to make a film on such a weak script. Shashank Dabral doesn't score even passing marks in writing this film. A comedy is a serious business and if you lose the spirit in the first reels, you lose the battle. 'Shaadi Ka Laddoo' faces the same problem.

It raises too much expectation from the combination of its cast, but delivers very little in terms of entertainment. The first flaw is that the film does not progress at all; the story does not take any dramatic or unexpected turn. The film has no surprises. Amit Roy's camera work is the only highlight. Dialogues are very weak; Shashi B Vaisya needs to watch films like 'Golmaal', 'Angoor' and 'Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron' before he sets in for a new film. Sanjib Dutt, the editor, must have used his scissors more often. Vishal-Shekhar's music is no way near to their first film 'Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi'.

Among actors, Sanjay Suri tries hard to impress but he is getting type cast. He plays a prey to destiny in his every film. He has lots of talent untapped so for but for that he needs a well-written character. Aashish Chowdhary lets his fans down; he was far ahead in performance in his last film 'Qayamat'. Divya Dutt is fantastic and plays the role of a Punjabi Kudi very well. It is her satirical comments that save the film a lot. Mandira sizzles every time she comes on screen. She can be termed as the hottest married heroine around. Sameer Malhotra and Negar Khan support the film aptly but their efforts go in vain as the story is not strong. On the whole, the film can do some business only in multiplexes. In single theatres and in small centers it will hardly find enough takers to keep the bells of box office ringing.
