Critic's I-view
'Some goals are so worthy, it's glorious even to fail.' Noted Param Vir Chakra awardee Lt. Manoj Pandey in his personal diary while fighting with the enemy at the Kargil peaks few years back. The lines seem to have inspired J.P.Dutta, producer-director of gargantuan film 'L.o.C.- Kargil', to reconstruct an epic that was eagerly awaited by critics and viewers alike. But, Dutta attains glory in this film as a winner as were those brave and dedicated soldiers who laid down their lives to make us live in our homes happily. This is a grand salute to all those who attained martyrdom in Kargil and also to J.P.Dutta for his classic film. No other film has ever been made on such a mammoth scale and with such picturization in Hindi.
The year for Bollywood ends with a shining note with 'L.o.C.- Kargil'. This film is also a milestone in Hindi cinema and is the last of the trilogy from Dutta that started with trendsetter 'Border'. 'L.o .C. - Kargil' is so realistic that sometimes it becomes difficult to believe that one is watching a film on screen. This is very near Steven Spielberg's 'Saving Private Ryan' in its presentation and film making values. The film is surely going to win hearts of masses and classes alike, and is a perfect film to end the year that saw many other films share the box-office money for the first time in last two decades.
'L.o.C-Kargil' doesn't have any particular hero in the main lead. It is a mega multi- starrer. It is a story of those few days in a soldier's life when he is so near to his motherland that he forgets all other relations. A bunch of soldiers posted at the most difficult strategic point of the earth fight to save their soil from the clutches of the enemy. There are more than a dozen main characters in the film. Abhishek Bachchan plays Captain Vikram Batra. He is a man of unmatchable bravery. Ajay Devgan is Lt. Manoj Pandey. Akshay Khanna plays Lt. Balwan Singh. He is one among the toughest officers of the lot. Sanjay Kapoor plays Major Deepak Rampal. He was on leave, but cut it short to join his men in the Kargil war. He was the backbone of the battalion. Sanjay Dutt is Lt.col.Y.K Joshi. He is a leader by all means. Saif Ali Khan plays Captain Anuj Nayyar who laughed death in its face. Suniel Shetty is in the role of rifleman Sanjay Kumar. He held the barrels of the two machine guns while the enemy was firing them.
Nagarjun as Major Padma Pani Acharya knew that there were just few steps between life and death in war. He boosted the morale of their jawans by being with them all the time. Karan Nath plays Major Rajesh Singh Adhikari, the first Indian officer who came as close as 50 meters of the enemy at the barbed bunker. Ashutosh Rana is Grend.Yogendra Singh Yadav. He was the key man in helping the Indian army to win back Tiger Hills. Manoj Bajpai is also Grend.Yogendra Singh Yadav; he survives in spite of taking 15 bullets on his body and is back to serve his battalion. And, Amar Upadhyay as Lt.Vijayant Thapar, a third generation officer, whose famous last letter to his father tells the story, 'mama papa when you receive this letter I will be watching you from heaven!'
Not many know that Dutta has a passion for war films. His brother died serving the forces some years back. He wanted to tell the people on both sides of the border that war only brought sorrow as he showed in 'Border'. In 'Refugee', he went nearer to border and depicted the life on both sides with the help of a love story. And, now in 'L.o.C.-Kargil' he shows that war could only be won with bravery in its literal meaning, but it was cruel to those who sent their near and dear ones on the border.
'L.o.C.- Kargil' is a movie which moves you to the core of your heart. It makes you cry and feel sad but also makes the viewers raise their head with pride for their Jawans. It tells that the machines don't win wars. In fact, those who choose to die for millions of their brethren win wars. The saga presented by J.P.Dutta is a must see for everyone who loves his country. Dutta, indeed, needs a standing ovation for making a four- hour- long documentary on Kargil. It is not based on a single story but it takes viewers on a journey where lives of super heroes come alive once again. A huge cast and a great task to complete, 'L.o.C.- Kargil' definitely is the most challenging film made till date in the history of Indian cinema.
Dutta plays with his camera on silver screen like a painter does with his brush on canvas. He is very well assisted by his technical team in his mission. If O.P.Dutta has penned some of the most memorable dialogues, then cameraman Karim Khatri has made Dutta turn his thoughts into images on screen. With the help of action co-ordinator Bhiku Verma, Dutta and Khatri have immortalized the epic saga forever. Aadesh Shrivastav's background music helps maintain the rhythms of the film. Though the music part of the film is weak as it has not been able to give even a single all- time hit patriotic song, the film succeeds in its purpose and will fetch more than enough money to make its distributors happy.
