He came to become a hero in Bollywood from the land of deserts, and tried his luck to shine like a star on the silver screen. Instead destiny made him a successful man behind the screen who eventually ended up in introducing many new comers to the filmdom. He is Sawan Kumar Tak, a man better known as a maker of films that delve in extramarital relations. He has worked with the likes of Nutan, Rajendra Kumar, Rajesh Khanna, Sridevi and Salman Khan. But of late he has been busy in making films with small budget and more importantly fresh faces. Love has been an integral part of his films, whether socially acceptable or debatable. His penchant for making films on various folds of affection has never died.

Now, after a long series of memorable films of Hind Cinema like 'Sautan', 'Sajan Ki Saheli', 'Sanam Bewafa' and others, Sawan Kumar prferes to build a bridge between two neighbors with the help of a love story. His new film 'Dil Pardesi Ho Gaya' released this Friday, talks of better relations between India and Pakistan. Like many other films of the recent past it does not spit venom on this neighbor country that has been the cause of three wars on the 'Line Of Control'. Instead it advocates about the remedies to remove this hatred. Sawan Kumar has struck the right note at the right time. The atmosphere between the two countries has never been so cozier in the past and when people in Delhi and Islamabad are negotiating to better the relations, this film is an icing on the cake, though.

Written, produced and directed by Sawan Kumar Tak, 'Dil Pardesi Ho Gaya' presents two new faces on screen -- Saloni Aswani and Kapil Jhaveri. Originally called 'Aur Kitne Pakistan', this film has a message that love can put an end to the violence in the valley. Kapil Jhaveri plays Sunny in 'Dil Pardesi Ho Gaya'. He is looking for his brother Ram (Ashutosh Rana) who is a Major in Indian Army. Ram fell in the hands of enemies and was taken prisoner by the Pakistani Army. Sunny tries his best to get Ram out of the hold of the Pakistani Army. When everything fails he himself sets about on a mission to rescue his brother. On his way, he saves life of a beautiful girl Rukhsar (Saloni Aswani) and a child caught in the dreadful fire.

Rukhsar can be his savior because she is the daughter of a Pakistani Brigadier (Amrish Puri). Rukhsar and Sunny meet again and as their relationship grows they fall in love with each other. One day Sunny gets courage to reveal his identity to Rukhsar and also tells her for what he has come on this side of the border. Rukhsar is stunned to know his lover's identity and finds it hard to choose between her lover and her father who is a man of principles and can kill his own daughter for the sake of his country. From her 'Dil Pardesi Ho Gaya' takes a turn that leads to a path that is full of old rivalries and misconceptions among the natives of two countries. It is as much about patriotism as it is about two lovers and two brothers.

'Dil Pardesi Ho Gaya' is a launch pad for both the lead performers. Saloni who has been seen in many ads including Dettol, Stayfree and others, makes an impressive debut in the film. On the other hand, Kapil too finds a mater in Sawan Kumar. He also comes from the modeling world. Having won accolades for his soft appearances in ads like Clinic All Clear and Digjam, he has guts to face the camera. Kapil made a guest appearance in Ken Gosh's 'Ishq Vishk' and was crowned 'Gladrags Mr. Photogenic' in 1998. Both the ex-models have tried hard to meet the requirements of the film, but they lack the maturity to play such emotional roles. Their body movements are not natural. Both of them require exhaustive training to do these roles. It will take some time for them to hone their acting skills, but their performance is not a total failure. The senior cast supports them. Amrish Puri has again done a role, which is a milestone in his career. However, it cannot be said for Ashutosh Rana. Rana always tries to make extra efforts in his performance, but it becomes irritating sometimes. Mukesh Rishi does his job aptly, and Mushtaq Khan needs a special mention for his acting as a dhaba wala.

The music is pleasant. Many songs have clicked with the audience. The title song is melodious and so is qawaali number. Music director Usha Khanna has done her job well and the music supports the film very well. The only weak point is that the movie stresses too much on goodness. The people of a country who have fought three wars with its neighbor will take some time to come to better terms. After seeing films like 'Roza', 'Gadar' and 'Hero', viewers will find it hard to take a U- turn. The plus point is that it doesn't have any strong challenge from other releases of the week. 'Dil Pardesi Ho Gaya' can find a good viwership in small towns and that can make Sawan Kumar Tak happy. Multiplexes will not attract the same kind of viewership. It would have worked better if the film were released around Eid.
