Sushmita Sen as a cop in 'Samay' is not tagged to her hero, as had been the practice in Bollywood films in the past. Robby Grewal, the director of the movie, though a first timer, has been bold enough to portray Sushmita as Assistant Commissioner of Police named Malvika Chauhan. She is boss and enjoys support of her subordinates, who are all males. Secondly, Robby Grewal plays obeisance to the Hollywood's 'Hitchcock'. This shows that Grewal is a follower of Hollywood thrillers.

Malvika Chauhan investigates the case of the murder of a businessman named Kapil Sharma. And the postmortem of the dead body of the businessman shows no foreign particle on the body. The motive of the murder is also not known. This means that the murderer leaves no clue. So Sushmita's team reaches a conclusion that the serial killer is on the loose. Again 'Samay' reminds us of 'Silence of the Lambs', because most of the reel is gone into the killer's characteristics, including the manner of investigation, discovery of forensic evidence etc. Sushmita finds this case of tormenting as death. This is a hard stuff of the film

However there is a soft side of the movie too. This comes from the life of the Sushmita Sen. She is a determined cop. She is not ready to compromise with her duty. She can take any risk including that of her life. As in her real life today, so also in the film, she has only her daughter to love even though she is a single mom. Her character is more important than that of her hero, Sushant Singh. The movie revolves around Sushmita.

Malvika Chauhan is accompanied by some honest cops like Inspector Satya (Sushant Singh) and Sub-Inspector Rafique (Dinesh Lamba). As the investigation moves Malvika gets a clue that could serve to catch the murderer. Rajesh Khera surprises by providing the clue. And there is Jackie Shroff providing the much needed twist. When Malvika tries to solve this case another murder takes place. This time it is a well-known actress. By looking at the murder she believes that both the murders have some connection. When the evidence and motive behind the second murder is being uncovered, a third murder takes place. And the victim in this case is a contract killer. Her search leads from one point to another. The trial of this killer and the motive forms the crux of the film. If you find out who is the killer, you need watch this movie, as we don't want to disclose the mystery.

The working style of Sushmita is very realistic and the way she investigates the case is like a real cop. Sushmita Sen does full justice to her part, as she is cast in a challenging role. Sushant Singh's role as her assistant is also appreciated. Jackie Shroff doesn't have much of a scope. Rajesh Khera and Tushar Dalvi's roles are fine too.

Robby Grewal's idea of making the film on such type of a murder mystery is good but he fails to maintain the mystery till the climax. The audiences are not so much happy with climax.

If we move to the other major part of the movie, which is music, this is nothing special though the background score keeps you on edge. The item number does titillate the audience. Sandeep Chowta gives the music, but fails to attract. The cinematography is average. On the whole the movie is good for time pass because of its climax.
