Excerpts of his recent tete-e-tete
To whom do you attribute your achievements?
I have been working as an independent music director for the last six years. Prior to that I worked with Surendra Singh Sodhi as assistant director for seven years.
How did you rise to become music director?
When I dreamt of becoming a music director I moved to Mumbai. At that time I was not aware of many things. I didn't know how musicians work in Mumbai. I learnt these points from Sodhi. After some time I learnt them and secured confidence.
How do you feel when you receive compliment as a senior music director?
I treat this compliment as a compliment only. It gives me confidence and guides me. Frankly, I want people to point out my weaknesses also, so that I do not repeat them in future.
How much role does the music play in a movie's success?
The good music is essential for a movie to hit. This plays an important role. If the script is bad, the movie also fails, howsoever good it may be.
Why didn't you get appreciation from the music of 'Uff Kya Jadoo Mohabbat Hai'?
It's not so. I have got a lot of appreciation from critics. A musician works, though it may not hit his target. If we fail, we benefit a lot by learning from our experience.
Who are your idols in music?
I like all old music directors. They include Madam Mohan, R.D.Burman and Laxmikant Pyarelal. I treat them as an institute. It's true that I give the music of my choice, but I take inspiration from old music directors.
Whom do you attribute most for your success?
I am grateful to Karan Johar, my guru Ustad Sultan Khan and Rajshri Productions for their support.
What's your message for new musicians?
I shall like to advise them to love work and devote themselves to it honestly and sincerely. This will help them rise in their career.
