'Chandni Bar', directed by Madhur Bhandarkar has also won awards for the Best Supporting actor (Atul Kulkarni) and Best Supporting Actress (Ananya Khare). This move is based on the life of Mumbai bar dancers. But the surprise of the evening is "Lagaan" which won seven awards including the best playback singer for Udit Narayan and best lyricist for Javed Akhtar.

Ashutosh Gowarikar's 'Lagaan' was the third Bollywood film to be nominated for the prestigious Oscars earlier this year. Set in British colonial times, 'Lagaan' is a period film about villagers winning a cricket match to triumph over their foreign oppressors. Gowarikar, an actor himself has directed three other film before 'Lagaan', which brought him immense success even at the Locarno Film festival in Switzerland last year.

Farhaan Akhtar's directorial debut 'Dil Chahta Hai' was adjudged the best Hindi film. Based on the story of three friends -- their ideologies and aspirations, this trend-setting film was a hit at the box office. Starring Aamir Khan, Akshaye Khanna and Saif Ali Khan, the costumes and hairstyles of 'Dil Chahta Hai' were a rage among the youth."/>

The 49th Film National Awards were announced in the capital today (July 26). The award for the best actor has been won by Malyalam superstar Muarli for Malyali film 'Neerkaran'. The best actress award has been shared by Tabu for 'Chandni Bar' and Shobhna for "Mitr -- my friend". The best film award has been bagged by Kannada film 'Dweepa'.
