Once intimate but later strangers, the Bollywood pair of Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra rocked the IIFA Rocks night celebrated as part of the International India Film Academy awards in Singapore June 7th-9th, 2012. Their performance to the song ‘Uff’ from their upcoming film ‘Teri Meri Kahaani’ ignited a fire on and off the stage. As soon as Shahid brought Priyanka on stage and the pair matched their steps, the audience threw up a deafening applause filled with total excitement. Punjabi singer Mika Singh stoked the fire, performing songs like ‘Chinta ta ta’, ‘Pungi’, ‘Jugni’, ‘Dhinka Chika’ and ‘Subah hone na de”. Next up, girl group ‘Blush’ comprising five members from the Philippines, India, Hong Kong, Japan, and South Korea turned the ceremony into an extravaganza Singaporeans hadn’t witnessed before. IIFA Rocks was a perfect blend of fashion and music including star-studded ramp shows accentuating the glamour. Bollywood actor Ayushmann Khurrana and pretty actress Chitrangada Singh hosted the glittering event. Designers Varun Bahl, Masaba Gupta and Suneet Verma showcased their collections with star showstoppers. While Nargis Fakhri and Vivek Oberoi walked for Bahl, Gupta had three showstoppers Shazahn Padamsee, Aditi Rao Hydari, and Zoa Morani. Verma's show had a surprise showstopper in actress Bipasha Basu. Model-turned-actress Gauhar Khan grooved to her popular songs like ‘Jhalla’ and ‘Chhokra Jawan’ from ‘Ishaqzaade’ followed by Shafqat Amanat Ali taking the audience grooving to his tunes as he sang songs like ‘Mora saiyyan’, ‘Tum mile’, ‘Bin tere’ and ‘Mitwa’. Sonu Sood, Neha Dhupia and Hazel Keech of the ‘Bodyguard’ fame danced to ‘Aa Ante’ from their upcoming film ‘Maximum’. Vishal-Shekhar concluded the memorable night with songs like ‘Sheila Ki Jawaani’, ‘Chammak Challo’, and ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’.
Earlier at IIFA Rocks, veteran singers Hariharan and Usha Uthup along with composer Lesle Lewis paid a humble tribute to 100 years of Indian cinema by recomposing and performing some of the timeless hits of different eras during IIFA Rocks night. The trio recreated the golden era by starting with songs from the 1950s and 1960s and moved on to the ones in the modern times. It was indeed memorable to listen to Lewis performance with popular song ‘Hawa Mein Udta Jaiye’ from ‘Barsaat’ (1949) and ‘Eena Meena Deeka’ from ‘Asha’ (1957). They later went on to sing songs from the 1960s era like ‘Khoya Khoya Chand’ from ‘Kala Bazaar’, ‘Madhuban Mein Radhika’ from ‘Kohinoor’ and ‘Roop Tera Mastana’ from ‘Aradhana’. The audience was seen swaying to the tunes and foot tapping numbers on ‘Main Hoon Pyaar Tera’, ‘Dekha Na Haye Re’ and ‘Yeh Dosti’. While ‘Disco Dancer’ title track represented the 1980s, ‘Tujhe Dekha Toh Yeh Jaana’ represented the 1990s era. Songs like ‘Chhaiyan Chhaiyan’, ‘Dhoom’ and ‘All Iz Well’ wrapped up the 2000 era. In the background were posters of ‘Laila Majnu’, ‘Teesri Manzil’, ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’ and ‘Jodhaa Akbar’ marking the 100 years of Indian cinema.
On the awards side, filmmaker Zoya Akhtar's ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’ swept the technical awards category with five trophies. ‘The Road Movie’ starring Abhay Deol, Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, Katrina Kaif and Kalki Koechlin walked away with five awards for best editing for Anand Subaya, best sound recording mixing for Anuj Mathur and Baylon Fonseca, best choreography for Bosco-Ceaser, best screenplay for Zoya and Reema Kagti and best cinematography for Carlos Catalan. ‘RA.One’ followed with four awards for best special effects, best sound design for Resul Pookutty, best song recording for Vijay Dayal for ‘Chammak Challo’ and best production design for Sabu Cyril.
